Looks like Big and I will go to the Fair tomorrow, where it is forecasted to be a cool 92 degrees. Which definitely beats the 100 degree plus, smokey weather of the past week. I'm excited!! And being able to breathe again has been nice too!
White Avenue looks gorgeous right now. Pomona should show off our best side this time of year, when so many visitors come to Pomona and form an impression of her. Several homes on White have been lushly relandscaped since last year. They add so much to the overall look of the street, but what is with the "Robert Torres for School Board" signs plastered all over the route to the Fair. One house at the corner of White and McKinley has no fewer than 3 Robert Torres signs around it. I wonder if his people would consider a cease fire until after the Fair is over. After which time, the Not Fair kicks into high gear for the election in November.
Robert Torres is the son of our former mayor Norma Torres. The above photo is from Robert's new website. A couple months ago, young Robert got an out-of-the-blue appointment to Pomona's parking commission, a gig he now uses as his occupation for his school board run. More about the Not Fair here. As for the kid in the red shirt in the photo above with Robert, he looks like he's thinking more about the Not Fair than the Fair.I was told today that Pomona Day at the Fair will be on Friday, September 11. Which, I suppose, is better than Friday the 13th. As for the Not Fair, the school board "election" will be held November 3, 2009.

Hmm, I thought he had a hit TV show already... (George Lopez) LOL
I thought that the outrage that I feel about the kids of Rothman & Torres running for the school board would be felt all around Pomona.
I hope that Pomona wakes up and not let this be a cake walk for these two kids with no practicle experience that merits election to any position.
Having the same last name as a previously elected official is not a qualification or at least it shouldn't be. It should be noted that the school board is a paid position. They will be getting a salary if elected.
I for one am getting outrage fatigue from the elected officials in this town. The gall that they have is staggering. It's time for people to use their outrage at the ballot box.
Lets work together to take Robert Torres DOWN! So far he has done nothing but use intimidation tactics to take over our city. We cant let him take over our schools. Alot of things are going to change this year and next year during the upcomming elections. We cant let him control everything. Robert has personally been talking to all the residents, but they dont know that he is nothing but a fake loser who pretends to care about our kids. Dont Vote Torres!!
As someone with school age kids, it does make me mad. I love my neighborhood, but Robert Torres may be the last nail in the coffin for us. We dream of the day we can send our kids to the local school/s. Like all of the others in our neighborhood, we have found a way to take our kids elsewhere. Having this sort of a person at the helm guarantees that not only will things not get better, but might even get worse. Look at Bush Jr.
Pomona Family
I might be able to consider someone of Robert Torres' age and lack of experience as someone whose experience was just coming out of the system and thereby having an "insider's" knowledge of how things work. BUT. He didn't attend Pomona Schools. Because his family lived in North Pomona, he is a product of the Claremont School System.
At least Jason Rothman went to PUSD and could have insights from that experience.
People, if you don't like the candidates, vote for the other one(s). Get out the vote, work campaign for the opposition and get out there. It takes work to make democracy work.
If you don't work it, the other side will, and guess who wins? The side with the most votes.
We all wield our individual votes, but to influence an election, you need to influence a larger number of voters than the other guys.
I have no pony in this race as I do not have children in the schools, but I really think our schools deserve better.
I think everyone living in Pomona has a pony in the race, Kate, no matter whether they have school age kids or not. The schools have been the number one reason so many people eventually give up on Pomona and move elsewhere. That's why it is so depressing to think that some one that is as much of an underachiever as Robert Torres could get in there. (Come on, his mom is a mayor and now a legislature and he only goes to MtSAC? Nothing against Jr. college, but anyone with an once of ambition that had his connections would at least trade it in for the best possible education. But why bother with getting the best education when he plans to get on the Pomona gravy train).
Did anyone see the photos on his campaign site? The one with him and Hilary Clinton looks Photoshopped... *gasp*
I could be wrong though, let's blow it up and examine it shall we. ha.
